Why We Do What We Do. Part 1
There are a lot of things we do in church without really knowing why or the biblical backing for it. It tends to make us normalize the thing and take it for granted. In this series I go into some of our church activities and the biblical and spiritual connotations of those activities. Hopefully this will help you act with understanding.
One common practice in my church is sharing testimonies. It’s a habit I’m trying to cultivate in our online following. And I know that it’s important not just for the one listening but for the one sharing as well. But why is it important?

One day in the Law School I shared my testimony of how I thought I would fail an exam but ended up with an A. Someone I didn’t even know heard it and held onto it to excel in her own exams. Two years later she shared the testimony of how someone’s testimony changed her life. And I know it’ll be an endless cycle of Christians seeing victories in their exams because they know it is possible.
Another instance that comes to mind is at a special Sunday service. It was great and there were many miracles but I walked out of there a changed woman; not because of the sermon or the prophecies but because of someone’s testimony.
I had seen her struggle with sickness same as me in high school. But when we got out something had changed about her and I had wondered what it was till that day.

A lot of people like to skip over testimony time and go right into the sermon or into prayer or prophecy time. What they don’t know is that testimony time in itself carries another anointing. Being happy and celebrating other people’s miracles is very important. Hearing stories of how people applied faith can teach you a thing or two in your own life.
But enough on the importance of hearing testimonies, why should we give them? Besides helping someone else achieve the benefits I stated above, what’s the reason? Let’s take a quick dive into the Bible.
“Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you”. Mark 5:19
Jesus had just delivered the man from a legion of demons and he had wanted to follow Jesus. This was the instruction he received instead and he went ahead to preach Jesus in the Decapolis.

Each time God did something wondrous for the Israelites He would tell them to tell their children. So that neither the father nor the child would forget what God can do.
Jesus wants us to tell others what he has done for us. If its a command from God, not much more needs to be said. When we receive a miracle or a blessing from God, He doesn’t do it just for us but for those around us as well. He knows how what He is doing in your life can change someone else’s. That’s why David said in Psalm 71:17 “I have become a sign to many…“.
What an honor to be a sign of God. I think that on its own is enough.

Celebrate God. Sharing your testimony is a celebration of God and His power. The more you celebrate God, the more you continue to see His hand mightily in your life.
Sharing your testimony is an acknowledgment of the role God played in your life. It is saying “I couldn’t have achieved this on my own”. Take my story of an A for instance. I just as easily could have kept it to myself and passed off as though I got it on my own. But I didn’t.
It’s pride to keep your testimony to yourself. Sharing is an act of humility and the Bible let’s us know that God will bring down the proud but elevate the humble.
